It's in the Blood

I watched a DVD and read a book about Boldt Castle this last weekend. Boldt Castle is in Alexandria Bay, New York, in the St. Lawrence seaway in the Thousand Island District. The story of the castle is a love story, about a wealthy hotelier who bought the Island for his wife, reshaped it into a heart, and built a castle for her. Today it is in the top ten of the most visited residences in the USA. It is being re-furbished by the US government. George C. Boldt halted work on the castle in 1904 when his wife Louise suddenly got ill and passed away. He continued his other business ventures in the area as well as his hotels in New York City but never set foot on the Island again. There is a lot of information about this place and about this man. Why does it intrigue me? My mother's maiden name was Boldt and she remembers talk at her large family gatherings (her dad had 20 siblings!) of the rich relative in New York in the hotel business. (Waldorf Astoria Hotel) My Aunt Kathy is the historian in our greater family and she claims it is true. She says she will send me verification soon. Meanwhile, I will enjoy Waldorf Salad, Eggs Benedict, and Thousand Island Dressing, a few of the things great, great, great Uncle George introduced to the world.

Silence is often misinterpreted but never misquoted.

Fascinating. Do you suppose us rellies could get some sort of tour discount, or at least an interview with Larry King...or something?
