Tension, Pure and Simple

The story takes place in Nazi occupied Poland during WWII. It is immediately apparent the the young lady, our heroine, is in trouble simply because she is Jewish. For the next 400 pages we are on a very tense walk through hostile territory. I say walk because although the story does move forward, it is slow. We get a look at what it must have been like to live during those times when there was such a great divide between the Nazis, the Poles, and Jews. It is often heartbreaking, but always tense. I know that the character is young and naive, but her continual waffling over obvious issues irked me at times. Her thought processes and justifications for questionable activities is interesting and convincing, but somewhat disturbing too. But, then, we do not know what we would be capable of either were we in a situation such as she finds herself. The Nazi Kommandant is well portrayed, and, is he a protagonist, or an antagonist? Even at the conclusion of the book it is difficult to determine.
The story is well written and captivating, the plot and characters easy to follow, with the climax leaving the reader ready for a sequel, or ..... maybe just leaving it to one's imagination is enough.
I will give it a four star rating.
